AMIB - Brazilian Society of Intensive Care

The history of AMIB (Brazilian Society of Intensive Care) is intertwined with the evolution of Critical Care Medicine in Brazil. Over the years, all efforts have always worked to strengthen the specialty and grant ICU professionals access to information that contributes to the improvement of the service to critically ill patients.

This great story began in the mid-70s, the country was undergoing political and socio-economic important changes. Several medical organizations began to form and that strengthen those that already existed. In 1977 came the SOPATI – Paulista Society of Intensive Care, led by doctors John Augustus Mattar , Mariza D’Agostino Dias, Jose de Castro Thales Lima and Max Grinberg.

A general meeting was held for the foundation of AMIB, and in December 11, 1980, was published in the Official Gazette the formation of the Brazilian Association of Intensive Care Medicine, which included the presence and membership of physicians from the Federal District, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Bahia and São Paulo.

Since then, the trajectory of AMIB was marked by many achievements and, above all, by many improvements that were implemented in Brazilian intensive care.
